“One day in Paris I was booked for a perfume advertising campaign with Richard Avedon. It was for the fashion house Lanvin and the perfume was named ‘Sinner’. The slogan they used was ‘Veruschka is a Sinner’. When I entered the studio, I was surprised to see Audrey Hepburn sitting in the dressing room. She was there speaking with Avedon about a portrait he was doing of her for American Vogue. The atmosphere was very quiet. I had to get ready, so I sat down next to her at the makeup table facing the mirror. Needless to say, I was very impressed as I had always admired her so much and as an awkward teenager dreamed of looking like Audrey Hepburn. She was extraordinarily beautiful but her expression was clearly not a happy one that day. As I was getting busy with my makeup, I heard her whisper to Avedon, ‘Please make me look like her’. I was shocked that this elegant and supremely unique woman wanted to look like me. I ventured to say, ‘I am a big fan of yours’ but it seemed too banal and I stopped before the words left my lips. Looking back, I wish I had told her how I felt about her. Perhaps we would have laughed and realized how we all feel insecure about ourselves at times, especially through difficult moments in life”.
